Communication as a Leader in 2021

At this point in time, humans have never communicated more (when you combine talking, tweeting, texting, and everything in between) — and it’s only going to increase in the future! Effective communication is critical towards being a good leader, and that becomes even more difficult when we live in a time of nonstop noise. The more distractions there are in our lives, the more precision and efficiency matter in being heard and remembered.

So, how do you bust through the noise? See some tips from media company Axios below:

  1. Write like you speak. Sometimes when writing, we start inserting a lot of leadership jargon and unnecessary exposition. This gets in the way of your message! Think about the power of strong conversational language, and take your tonal styles from that.
  2. Prioritize. We know that attention spans are shrinking — and getting shorter. Get to your point quickly so that readers can digest and move on.
  3. Repetition matters. If you’ve got a key point, make sure your readers understand it’s such by repeating it crisply. By the time you’ve annoyed yourself, others are probably picking up that this is important.
  4. Diversify. Fast. In your role as a leader in 2021, you should be able to speak with relative authority about diversity, equity, and inclusion in regards to your specific position or sphere or influence. Make sure you are taking a pulse of your audience and recognizing any power or privilege you may bring to a conversation.

How have you effectively communicated in 2021? And how might you change your communication style in the future to fit those you lead?
